About Gwendolyn Downing

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Alabama, with 36 years experience. I worked in a public agency for several years and have been in private practice for 17 years. I have helped individuals who have been referred through Self-referral, Employee Assistance Programs, and family court systems. I have had the privilege of helping people with Depression and Anxiety, Chemical and Process Addictions, Trauma and abuse issues, Family and Life issues, as well as other challenging situations.

I utilize several therapeutic strategies, including Motivational Interviewing, Emotionally-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Trauma-focused Therapy, and Solution-Focused Therapy. The strategies utilized are determined by the unique needs of the person with whom I am interacting. I believe each person is unique and presents with unique needs and unique strengths for addressing the identified concerns.

My focus is on people, not labels or statistics. I make it my practice to encourage and elevate people to be the success they were meant to be.

It requires courage and commitment to reach out for help, and I would be honored to be part of your journey. I look forward to working with you!

“I didn't want to do therapy, I felt it was weak minded of me to even consider it. I finally reached a point of complete exhaustion, spiritually, mentally and physically. Therapy has helped me a lot more than I anticipated.”

“She is a very compassionate and God-fearing therapist. I really appreciate working with her.”

“I highly recommend Ms. Downing. She’s easy to talk to, never judgmental, and gives practical advice that truly helps. I always leave sessions feeling heard and supported.”

“Gwendolyn is a fantastic therapist, I’ve been working with them on and off for the last few years and the care, understanding, and passion to help you shines through. Nothing is ever too much, and I always feel heard and listened to when speaking with them. I’ve been navigating a particular difficult part of my life, and have felt so supported through out. I truly believe my mental health has greatly improved and my ability to deal with things moving forward is growing day by day and session by session. I would 100% recommend therapy with Gwendolyn!”

“Gwen has supported me over a period of time in developing new life skills, including recognising and limiting time with unhealthy environments and people, breaking out of unhealthy dynamics and seeing myself, others and the world through the more realistic healthy lens, and in doing so, make different (albiet unfamilar) choices and challenging long held but unhelpful beliefs. This has opened up more possibilites and helped me to discover new interests and more rewarding and meaningful experiences.”

“I love Mrs. Downing! She has helped me change my life!”

“She has helped me not blame myself that’s for sure”

“Gwendolyn Downing has been a Godsend through the loss of my mom and subsequently my husband, my cousin and my father. I have laid a lot of heavy burdens on her lap to help me sort through and she has been attentive, compassionate, honest, uplifting, and generally phenomenal. I have never had anyone so supportive outside of my mom. It’s been such a positive and healing experience with her that I would recommend her to anyone going through life’s challenges. Thank you a million times over for your support!”

“Gwen gets me and our conversations are sometimes like therapist and client,
Other times like a conversation between friends where she gives gentle persuasion and direction in matters. I like her charm, advice and plain way of speaking. Gwen is tell it like it is, doesn’t sugar coat (but always politically correct wording) and gives me homework in occasion.

Glad I joined and connected with Gwen!”

“Ms. Gwendolyn is a wonderful therapist! She is very validating and will not hesitate to listen to and understand your concerns.”

“It's comforting knowing thatI have a coach that is there to support me.”

“Gwendolyn has been very supportive of my goals and has given me the resources to achieve them. Before BetterHelp, I felt stuck and unable to progress, even though I had a strong desire to change, I wasn't able to do it on my own. Therapy has given me the confidence and reassurance I've needed to make progress.”
