About Mary Sudduth

Hello, I am glad you are here! You are either taking the first step on your journey to wellness or reaching out to continue that journey. I am the founder of “Wellness Place, LLC.” After 25+ years of professional experience and study in the areas of social work, mental health and healthcare and many years of self-study in nutrition and philosophy, I have come to realize that well-being depends on more than a healthy body. On my journey through life, I have learned that mental, physical, social and spiritual components make up who we are and how we define ourselves. It is my goal & the goal of “Wellness Place” to help you on your journey to wellbeing.

I have practiced in the field of Social Work since 1993 and hold a BA in Social Work, Minor in Gerontology from Christopher Newport University, an Master of Social Work from Virginia Commonwealth University and Virginia Licensure. My areas of practice include healthcare social work, mental health, substance abuse, education, and non-profit, adjunct college professor, and I have published, and written curriculum for educational programs and groups. My Areas of concentration include healthcare, aging, death & dying, grief, oncology, chronic & acute medical conditions. My treatment modalities include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, Biopsychosocial Spritual, Problem Solving, and Systems Theory, but I use an ecclectic, individualized approach based on where you are in life and what direction you wish to take. I like to use very practical ways to address obstacles that are keeping you from the peace you seek. This often includes learning new relaxation techniques, use of resources like worksheets and websites, and proactive approaches to stress and problem prevention.

I consider myself a generalist therapist (kind of like a what a family doctor is in medicine) have successfully assisted people with the following issues:
* Depression
* Anxiety
* Bipolar I and II
* Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
* Family and Relationship issues
* Parenting
* Caregiver Stress
* Acute and Chronic Health Conditions, including cancer
* Loss of a loved one, people or pets
* Work related stress
* Aging and age related issues
* Anger/Violence Prevention
* Substance Use and Abuse

I have worked with people from various cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds and sexual orientations, but do not specialize in LBGTQIA issues. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to assist you!

“Mary is awesome! First time using therapy and have no complaints and feel connected and much better with advice, tools, and tips.”

“Mary helped my wife and I in countless ways. If you compare where we were when we started working with her, and where we are now, the improvement is almost unrecognizable. She is very knowledgable and takes a very measured approach with both people. This makes both parties feel heard and that progress is being made (which it was).”

“Mary has helped me through part probably one of the darkest times in my life. I am so happy. I had something to guide me and help me see that my situation could get resolved and my life get better”

“Fantastic, responsive, and empathetic therapist with tons of experience.”

“She is the best. So understanding and adaptable to help me during each session!”

“She is very easy to talk and open up to her.”

“Mary is knowledgeable and a great support. I had been struggling with personal relationships and she has helped me navigate through and find ways to connect with people in meaningful ways. I highly recommend her to anyone that needs support and advice.”

“Mary is a genuine, understanding person who has allowed me to rant, complain, and open up about the issues and situations we've discussed. She openly listens and then gives responses instead of hearing what is said then preparing a general comment. I look forward to our sessions which is also a huge benefit as it doesn't come as a chore. 10/10. Would recommend.”

“Mary is a very effective therapist. We align on many different levels, and I appreciate her knowledge and experience to help guide me through the emotional issues I’m experiencing in any given week. I highly recommend Mary!”

“Very understanding and always willing to reach out even when we don’t have a meeting planned! Incredibly considerate.”

“Mary has been very understanding and has been supportive and helpful throughout this experience. She has been very helpful with understanding and explaining things if I don’t understand something. She takes the time to respond and lets me know if she is out of the office but will respond as soon as she can. I love how she communicates openly.”

“Better Help and my therapist Mary have been a tremendously supportive resource. I feel safe in my sessions and leave with actionable steps for my growth.”

“Very good at listening and providing helpful feedback. Can also make observations or comments while still coming off respectfully.”

“Mary really has helped our relationship in so many ways. She gives us helpful assignments and listens so well. We look forward to all our meetings.”

“I enjoy working with Mary because she understands my concerns and issues. She sends me worksheets to do to understand myself better and techniques I can use to ease my troubles.”
