About John

I enjoy working collaboratively and creatively with my clients. I believe deeply in the power of the therapeutic process and its capacity to facilitate meaningful change. Using a holistic and eclectic approach, I primarily draw on Client-Centered Therapy and incorporate evidence-based practices, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), into my work.

My 18 years of experience in clinical counseling have been shaped by multicultural and trauma-informed perspectives. Throughout my career, I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults in both inpatient and outpatient settings, helping them navigate a range of concerns, including trauma, depression and anxiety, identity and self-esteem, substance use and chemical dependence, crisis management, and interpersonal conflict.

I strive to create a genuine, empathic, supportive, and nonjudgmental therapeutic environment where you can feel safe exploring your experiences. Together, we will identify your strengths and inner resources while examining the challenges and distress you may be experiencing. My goal is to support you in strengthening your self-esteem, fostering personal development, and discovering insights and solutions that facilitate meaningful progress.

Additionally, I will help you cultivate greater self-awareness and insight through the exploration of your thoughts and feelings, develop effective strategies for navigating the challenges that bring you to counseling, and move toward greater healing, growth, and self-understanding.

 • “John is incredible!!”
 • “I have only just begun my counseling experience with John and I can't stress enough how engaged and compassionate he is! I feel as though Better Help's ability to match me with someone who will be a great tool in my healing journey was spot on! Can't recommend him enough!”
 • “John is incredibly professional, caring, and helpful. He is so patient. Most notably, he is willing to make subtle changes when a particular technique or communication style isn’t as effective for me. I’m so glad to be working with him.”
 • “I look forward to every session I have with John. His main focus for our sessions long term and short term is to learn how I can live a richer and more fulfilling life. I appreciate that it’s not necessarily about finding the immediate answers, but rather looking at life and our journeys holistically.

What I find the most helpful is his empathy and understanding of the layers and complexities that make up me, my upbringing, my issues and my desires in life. He understands racial and identity issues, which saves me a lot of time and energy to not have to exhaustingly explain. If you’re struggling today, I’m sure John can help you out!”
 • “I began seeing John as I was entering a particularly distressing period of my life, and through that he has been one of the most helpful therapists I have had throughout my several years of therapy. Our sessions were accompanied by compassion, understanding, and honesty. He has helped me to allow myself to grow and be kinder to myself.”
 • “Great”
 • “John is fantastic! He is able to hold a mirror up so you can look at yourself and examine parts of you that you may not have seen. He is extremely supportive in your self-discovery journey and helps with your growth every step of the way.”
 • “I came to John after a truck plowed into our stationary SUV killing my husband and leaving me with broken bones and a brain injury. It was hard for me to think, speak, sleep, eat, and I felt stuck in a repeating loop in which I viewed the accident over and over. John helped me stop that fairly quickly, and we have worked for not quite a year on how to live with loss and injury, and he has been essential to my recovery.”
 • “John help has been illuminating the issues on my path for self improvement.”
 • “I’ve had more progress with John within just a couple of sessions than I’ve had with my previous therapist that I’ve been seeing for a year. He’s extremely thoughtful and really caters to the circumstance and mental state you’re in. I’m most impressed with how he’s able to keep track of my thoughts and make deep and introspective connections, even when I myself have trouble staying on top of everything! His focus on living a more fulfilling and richer life also grants me greater freedom to not immediately think of myself as problematic, but simply human.”
 • “Over the past several months, John has helped me work on my struggles with anxiety as well as helped me focus on building my confidence—finding better ways to speak to myself and understand my strengths rather than focusing on my weaknesses. After a few years of setbacks, it's great to have someone in your corner that approaches me with compassion while also speaking from experience. I've recommended him to friends of mine and look forward to continuing to work with him to establish better boundaries and expectations for myself as well as navigate future trials and triumphs with the tools he's given me.”
